SAFE CHILD SCHEME LAUNCH

10.30 A.M., WEDNESDAY 12 NOVEMBER

ST DAVID’S CENTRE (OUTSIDE BOOTS), CARDIFF

When a small child gets separated from its parents in a busy street, store or shopping centre, it is very distressing for adult and child alike.  Youngsters will always get lost and a lost child is a vulnerable child.  Yet few people know best how to comfort and reassure lost and frightened children and assist in reuniting them with their anxious family as quickly as possible.

Research shows wide variations in the way parents react when children get lost and the way in which shop staff cope with lost children.  Likewise advice given to children to do if they get lost varies enormously.

The Safe Child Scheme (Cardiff), co-ordinated by Cardiff City Centre Management Team, is an initiative between themselves, South Wales Police, Cardiff Council, Cardiff City Retail Partnership and the NSPCC, which aims to train retail staff and others to deal with these sensitive and occasionally traumatic incidents in an effective and co-ordinated manner.  Its main objective is to ensure that children and parents are reunited as quickly as possible.

The scheme will be launched on the above date in St David’s Centre, the heart of the city’s shopping area.  City Centre Manager Paul Williams will give a short introduction, Naomi Wilkinson of Channel 5’s children’s programme Milkshake will then present the scheme and community police officer PC Mario Mariott will present a ‘Safe Child’ lesson.

If you are interested in attending the launch or require any further information on the scheme, please contact either Lowri ap Robert at the Cardiff Initiative on 029 20347800 e mail   or Paul Williams on 029 20664723.
